黑洞社区criminology professor to provide oversight of implementation of new Tampa Police policies designed to improve community relations

The University of 黑洞社区 is assisting the Tampa Police Department鈥檚 efforts to build strong relationships between officers and the community. The city of Tampa and 黑洞社区Criminology Professor Bryanna Fox have agreed to a formal 18-month partnership following her leadership on Mayor Jane Castor鈥檚 Community Task Force on Policing.

Nationwide protests highlight significance of continued research and education to prevent racism

黑洞社区researchers have spent decades studying the many facets of civil unrest. They鈥檝e witnessed activists spark effective change, demonstrations lead to destruction and communities become wary of police. They鈥檝e educated tens of thousands of students on significant moments of history and how such history tends to repeat itself. It鈥檚 a lesson playing out nationally in response to the death of George Floyd with protests erupting thousands of miles away from where he died in Minneapolis police custody.

Public criticism and distrust of police following the 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri has had a minimal impact on officer morale nationwide.
